Glossop apprentice takes first step on career ladder

A young car enthusiast from Glossop has embarked on a three-year apprenticeship with the aim of becoming the best in the business.

Nineteen-year-old Alex Marsden has been accepted by Hyde Volkswagen retailer Smith Knight Fay to be the latest recruit on the technician apprenticeship scheme.

Over the next three years Smith Knight Fay will invest nearly £30,000 to train Alex through to technician status.

Alex, who has joined straight after leaving Glossop College where he did his A-levels, was inspired to become a technician because of the high levels of IT and technology involved.

He said: “I am passionate about the Volkswagen brand and I want to go as far in my career as I can. I enjoy new technology and this position gives me the chance to develop a career I’ll enjoy.

“I am over the moon to be given this break into the motor industry and very grateful to Smith Knight Fay Volkswagen for giving me this chance.”

Smith Knight Fay’s brand manager, Thomas Koutsavakis, said: “In the current economic climate, it’s important local businesses give youngsters the opportunity to learn and develop a career.

“Alex passion for cars was one of the main reasons why he’s been given this place on the apprenticeship programme.

“He may only be 19, but I’m confident Alex will come through the three years with flying colours.”
