Apprentices take first step on career ladder

Two young automotive enthusiasts from Heathrow are embarking on a three-year apprenticeship with the aim of becoming the best in the business.

Seventeen-year-old, Darren Varney and 18-year-old, Harjot Hira, have been accepted by Cordwallis Volkswagen Van Centre to be the latest recruits on the technician apprenticeship scheme.

Over the next three years Cordwallis Volkswagen Van Centre in Heathrow will invest nearly £60,000 to train Darren and Harjot through to technician status.

The two new apprentices both follow in the footsteps of their fathers with Harjot’s dad owning a garage and Darren’s working as a mechanic.

Cordwallis’ service manager, Carlos Marques, said: “In the current economic climate, it is important local businesses give youngsters the opportunity to learn and develop a career.

“Both Darren and Harjot are passionate about motor vehicles and are willing to work hard, two of the main reasons why they’ve been given the place on the apprenticeship programme.

“They’re both at the start of their careers but I’m sure we will see great things from them.”

Harjot, from Southall, said: “I love working with vehicles and I was thrilled when I heard the news that I had been accepted on to the apprenticeship scheme.”

Darren, from Bedfont, who started at Cordwallis straight from leaving school, said: “I have always been interested in motor mechanics and I am passionate about the Volkswagen brand. My goal is to go as far as I can in my career and I feel the apprenticeship will give me the ideal opportunity to achieve this.”

Along with sites in Maidenhead and Heathrow, Cordwallis has a van service centre in Oxford which all supply the full range of both new and used Volkswagen commercial vehicles. For further information, please contact Cordwallis in Heathrow on 020 8582 6000 or visit www.cordwallis.com.
