A schoolgirl from Sharpness is celebrating having won top prize in a competition to design a mallard for the opening of a new housing development.
11 year old Devon Povey created the most colourful duck for Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, as the developer opened The Mallards, a collection of three and four bedroom homes located half a mile from the Severn Estuary, where the bird is frequently spotted.
Devon’s winning creation now features on the development’s signage and marketing brochure, which is just across the road from her classroom at Sharpness Primary School.
Her enthusiastic efforts also won her an iPod Shuffle. But while Devon took the main prize, her class mates also received book vouchers for taking part in the competition and a special frieze was presented to the school showing the work of all of the youngsters.
Rose Haynes, field sales manager for Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, said: “The competition was all a bit of fun, but there was a serious side to it, with the winning entry appearing on our signs and literature for The Mallards development.
“We are grateful to the school for letting the children take part. I’m sure they enjoyed it and we thank them for their excellent efforts.”
Head teacher Jill Brookes said the children had a great time creating the mallards and it was rewarding for Devon to see her winning picture in print.
