50 not out for Mr Higgs

One of the Midlands’ most respected lawyers is celebrating 50 years as a practising solicitor.

Higgs & SonsDavid Higgs (73) qualified in February 1963 and was admitted to the solicitors roll on June 11, 1963. He was articled to his uncle George Higgs for five years prior to qualification from 1957 after studying at Bromsgrove School.

The firm was founded by David’s great grandfather, Joseph Higgs in 1875 and David is the fourth generation of the Higgs family to work at the firm. His grandfather, Joseph, and father, also called Joseph, all worked for the firm.

“When I joined the firm back in 1957 there were about 40 people and it was obviously a very different place back then,” says David. “Photo copiers were just about being invented but there was lots of ink everywhere!

“Back in 1963 when I qualified, I was doing general practice, which included conveyancing, wills, trusts, company formation and family law. I even did some crime as part of my work. Today, things are completely different, with lawyers specialising in their field of law.

“Today, Higgs is a thriving firm going from strength to strength and I’m delighted to still be a part of it.”

David is a former senior partner at the firm and retired as a partner in 2003. Today, he continues at the firm as a highly respected private client legal consultant.

David is married with two children. His son Mark is also a lawyer, working in London.

Higgs & Sons works from two offices in the Black Country – Waterfront Business Park in Brierley Hill and Kingswinford. The firm employs more than 200 people, which includes over 100 specialist lawyers.
