A Wrexham athletics club for children and adults with learning difficulties has secured sponsorship from a local business.
Wrexham Volkswagen has agreed to cover the £250 costs of winter sports hall hire for The Wrexham Special Olympics Athletics Club.
The club, which is an official branch of Special Olympics GB, has around 20 members with a range of learning disabilities aged from 12 to 70, who train every week throughout the year and compete at least three times a season in Regional Championships.
During the winter months the athletes move indoors to the Ysgol Morgan Llwyd where they take part in body conditioning, circuit training, short sprinting and relays.
Club secretary Steve Gittins said: “We are so grateful to Wrexham Volkswagen for their generous sponsorship, and it is especially gratifying to see a local business supporting local athletes.
“As a club we have to raise all funds ourselves, but thanks to them our hall hire costs are covered for the whole of the winter season.”
Jane Hargreaves, brand manager of Wrexham Volkswagen which is part of the Swansway group, said: “We are always thrilled to support local good causes, and it’s nice to know that our sponsorship will make such a difference to the club.
“We hope that come the summer all of their indoor training will pay off with lots of regional medals.”
