Top flight rugby league team London Broncos has joined forces with Selco Builders Warehouse to raise £2,500 for a leading cancer charity.
Broncos’ home match with St Helens at The Hive on Saturday was nominated as the Super League club’s official charity fixture of the season.
Macmillan Cancer Support – nominated charity of Selco Builders Warehouse who are the main sponsors to the Broncos – were the beneficiaries of the day’s activities.
A pound from each ticket sold for the match was donated to the charity, while fans of both clubs dug deep by donating to bucket collectors around the stadium.
Members of the London Broncos squad joined in with the collecting before kick-off, while the team warmed up in Macmillan T-shirts.
When the players ran out, a guard of honour was formed by pupils from Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Bushey, Hertfordshire, with the youngsters then enjoying the game courtesy of tickets donated by Selco.
Helen Cooper, marketing director of Selco Builders Warehouse, said: “It was a fantastic day of fundraising and we would like to thank all London Broncos and St Helens fans for being so generous in their donations.
“Macmillan Cancer Support is very close to the hearts of all associated with Selco and we are delighted that the Broncos offered their support over the weekend.”
Selco Builders Warehouse has pledged to raise £50,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support throughout 2014, to add to the £100,000 donated by the company over the previous two years.
Jason Loubser, general manager of London Broncos who went down 58-16 to Super League leaders St Helens in Saturday’s match, said: “We were delighted to use Saturday’s game to show our support for Selco’s charity push and thrilled that the collections proved successful.”
Kelly Whitehouse, spokesperson for Macmillan Cancer Support, said: “Our huge thanks must go to Selco Builders Warehouse, London Broncos and the fans of Broncos and St Helens.
“The excellent fundraising effort at Saturday’s match will go a long way to continuing to help us provide support and information to people who have been affected by cancer and those closest to them.”
