A dozen members of staff from a leading builders’ merchant saddled up to raise more than £10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Staff from Selco Builders Warehouse got in the charity spirit by cycling a 50-mile circuit around their branches in Tottenham, Barking, Romford, Walthamstow and Enfield.
The energy-sapping challenge was part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning event. The five branches involved in the cycle also brought in cash with barbecues, a quiz night, fancy dress and cake stalls, raising £10,200 in total.
The fundraising at the five branches was supplemented by Selco customers putting their skills to the test by attempting to chip footballs into cement mixers and taking part in darts competitions.
Barking branch manager Chris Wedlock said: “All five branches joined together superbly to raise a fantastic amount of money.
“The bike ride was a real challenge but all 12 taking part did a great job.
“We’re proud to support Macmillan Cancer Support. It’s a fantastic charity, and sadly almost everyone has been affected by cancer in one way or another.”
Macmillan Cancer Support is Selco Builders Warehouse’s nominated charity. Branches across the country were involved in raising money by holding coffee mornings and cake sales.
Selco has already beaten its target of raising £150,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support in three years. The target since 2012 has been to raise £50,000 each year.
Helen Gemmell, marketing director at Selco, said: “The Macmillan Coffee Morning has become a big event on the charity calendar and everyone at Selco is delighted to have played a part in it.
“All of our 35 branches have a café so they made a great venue for these fundraisers.
“It was fantastic to see staff at these five branches putting themselves through the pain barrier by taking part in the 50-mile cycle ride.
“We’re extremely proud to have raised so much money since we started supporting Macmillan in 2012 and we’ve already exceeded our target of raising £50,000 for this year.”
This year Selco branches, suppliers and customers have taken part in various fundraising events for Macmillan Cancer Support, including charity bike rides, golf days and a nominated charity match at Selco-sponsored rugby Super League side London Broncos.
Selco branches in Wales and England supply a massive range of building materials including doors, windows, insulation, roofing, heating, plumbing supplies, building materials, lighting, electrical products, kitchens, bathrooms and timber.
Branches also offer an in-branch café, trade counter services, direct-to-site delivery options and van size parking spaces, all designed to make it easier for tradespeople to get onto the job as soon as possible.
