Coventry School Receives Cricket Masterclass

A Coventry school received a professional cricket masterclass when Birmingham Bears visited to handover a brand new PE kit designed by a former pupil.

Five schools were invited to Birmingham Bears’ Edgbaston classroom where pupils were challenged to design a new cricket kit. Little Heath Primary School pupil Rajmeet Chopra was selected as the winner by Birmingham Bears sponsor, Selco Builders Warehouse.

Selco arranged the classroom sessions to mark the opening of a new branch on Austin Drive in Coventry. The school which the winning pupil attended benefitted from having the winning design made up into a PE kit for the whole class.

Birmingham Bears player Keith Barker and coach Andy Turnbull joined Selco at the school to deliver the shirts and a cricket masterclass.

Now at secondary school Rajmeet was able to return to her former school to see the finished shirts being handed over and received her own shirt to take home, whilst pupils in year six were given the chance to hone their cricketing skills with a session with the Birmingham Bears team.

Selco marketing director Helen Gemmell said working with the school had been important for the new branch. “When opening new branches we like to be able to integrate with the local community right from the word go. As well as employing people from the local area, we look to support local schools, charities and community initiatives and this is a fantastic example of that. It was great to see the children having great fun enjoying the coaching session provided by the Birmingham Bears.

“Thanks to our partnership with Birmingham Bears we were able to give five schools the opportunity to experience the Edgbaston classroom earlier this year and it was a pleasure to see how proud Rajmeet is to see her winning paper design made into a real shirt and presented to the school.”

Little Heath Primary School Year 6 class teacher, Mr Ward, added: “Our pupils really enjoyed the cricket session with Keith Barker and Andy Turnbull. They embraced all the challenges set by Andy and leaned new skills for catching and batting in cricket. They are all really proud of their new kit and it will be wonderful to use them in our PE lessons in the future.”
