Pupils from a Hertfordshire primary school have been royally rewarded after helping inspire road names at a new housing development.
Pupils aged eight to 11 from Bushey Manor Junior School were asked by the country’s leading house builder, Persimmon Homes, to suggest names for its new site in Bushey.
Elaine Stratford, Sales and Marketing Director at Persimmon Homes Thames Valley, commented: “The name for the development was prompted by the fact that the first homes would be completed during the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year and as a result the name of Queen’s Acre was selected to commemorate the event.
“To extend this theme, Persimmon contacted the local council to propose that the formal road names within the development would also be based on the Jubilee year with a royal theme.
“We then contacted the headteacher at Bushey Manor Junior School to ask if their pupils would like to undertake the task of coming up with royal road names. They of course agreed and we were delighted to present the awards just before the school held its own Jubilee picnic for the children and their families.”
Three pupils who provided royal road names were picked out as winners and each received a certificate and stationery pack, while the school was presented with a £200 voucher from Persimmon Homes.
Beth Filer, aged nine, Katie Schofield, aged 11 and Connor Lowden, aged 11, all from Bushey, were picked out for their sparkling suggestions Monarch Close, Royal Jubilee Road and Queen Lane.
Peter McCreadie, headteacher of Bushey Manor Junior School in Grange Road, said: “It has been fantastic to get the children involved in a fun but stimulating competition.”
“It’s been enjoyable to create road names for a new development and the pupils have had an opportunity to learn more about the housing industry. We will use the voucher to purchase books for the school.
“I can’t thank Elaine and everyone at Persimmon Homes Thames Valley enough for involving us in this project and I hope the link between us continues to grow.”
Elaine said she was delighted with the feedback and the way the pupils had set about the task.
She said: “The pupils have obviously worked very hard at this competition and the names they put forward were ideally suited and we hope will be used by the council to ensure that the development will retain such an important part of our British heritage.”
The new homes at the Queen’s Acre development are due to go on sale in the autumn and are a mix of three and four bedroom, semi-detached and detached houses.
The development is located off of Aldenham Road in Bushey and is within walking distance of Bushey Station, offering residents easy access to central London and beyond.
